| Professional Installation Tips
Now that you’ve purchased your new flooring, you must be anxious to have it installed quickly. We want the same thing! That’s why Carpet Mill Outlet employs only bonded professional carpet installers. These highly trained and experienced individuals will assure that your job goes as smoothly as possible; with a minimum of inconvenience and disruption of your daily routine. Because there can be unforeseen construction demands, we can only estimate the length of time it may take to complete your flooring installation.
CMO installers specialize in carpet installation, but they can also help you get your home ready for the laying of your new flooring. Bear in mind, however, that for them to do so will require a significant increase in man hours and perhaps even additional crews. These charges will be added to your installation bill. So, it makes sense to do as much of the preparation work yourself or with the assistance of family and friends. However, if you know you are going to need additional assistance, please make arrangements with your salesperson in advance of scheduling your installation date. If installation is delayed because the area is not prepared, additional charges will accrue.
Clear and Clean
Clear the room of all objects, including furniture, wall hangings, lamps, electronic equipment, plants, etc. Large items such as cabinets, desks, dressers, hutches, armoires, and bed framing are easier to remove if the drawers are emptied and/or bedding removed before lifting the frame. The use of heavy-duty dollies, which can be easily rented or borrowed, are very helpful with heavy furniture and electronic equipment, such as large screen TVs. If CMO is going to move these large items you must empty them completely before the installers arrive.
Electronics, including computers should be removed from the area. Use colored masking tape, available in hardware stores, to “color key” printer, monitor, VCR, DVD, speakers, and other cables for easier reconnection. Some set up and reprogramming may require a professional.
Very large and heavy items such as pool tables and pianos may require the assistance of professional movers and result in additional costs. Be aware that once pool tables and pianos are ultimately positioned on top of the new flooring they may require leveling, and pianos may have to be retuned.
Appliances with plumbing and gas lines, such as refrigerators and stoves, must me disconnected and removed from the area. We can do some basic unhooking and hookup
of appliances, as long as there are no complications. If we do provide appliance service we cannot be responsible for existing mechanicals or for any new materials that may be needed. Heavy-duty refrigerator dollies can be rented easily and do double duty in the removal of heavy furniture items as well. The removal of some appliances may require the assistance of a professional plumber at your expense.
Any additional labor required should be discussed in advance with your sales person/installer to assure smooth scheduling and no delays.
Please keep in mind that we are not professional movers and will not be held responsible for unforeseen damages.
Carpet and Floor Covering Removal
To save money you may wish to remove the existing carpeting yourself in advance of the arrival of CMO installers. If you choose to do it yourself, make sure to remove all of the old carpet, pad, and staples but leave any tack strips in place. The existing tack strips may actually save time when the new carpet is installed. If any break or come loose, they will be replaced by the installers. Once the existing floor coverings are removed the sub flooring will be evaluated. Additional sub-floor preparation may be needed to ensure a high quality installation job. If so, there may be additional material and labor charges. This is also a good time to fix squeaks in the floor. Not all squeaks can be fixed, although we can try.
Clean Up Time
Now it’s clean up time:
Vacuum, sweep, and mop the exposed floor surface as needed.
There will never be a better time than now to wash or paint walls and ceilings, repaint or touch-up baseboards. Just make sure not to schedule your flooring installation until all of these jobs are completed. Fresh paint can sometimes be scuffed or marred during installation, so make sure to reserve some paint for touch-up if needed. Putty or stain may be needed to touch up woodwork trim.
It is not necessary for you to be at home during the installation process. Simply make arrangements in advance with your CMO installer as to how and where to pick up a key or gain access to your home.
Please make sure that your electricity is on to supply power tools. Also it is necessary that your heating/cooling thermostat be set at a minimum of 68° F for 48 hours prior to installation. Some products may need to acclimate to your home a day in advance.
Door and Trim Removal
Doors between rooms must be removed from the hinges and stored away from the installation area. Some may need to be cut at an extra charge. If doors are cut, there is a chance that the edges may splinter or chip. Some exterior doors may need new thresholds. Baseboards and/or quarter round do not have to be removed prior to carpet installation.
